The Guardian Profile : Luciano Pavarotti : Lust for life
He is one of the world’s great opera singers, whose extravagant girth bears witness to hishuge spirit. And, writes Adam Sweeting, tomorrow he will be a giant presence in the Three Tenors’ TV concert, the biggest in history
The question of size is inseparable from any discussion of Luciano Pavarotti. Everything abouthim is big - his body, of course, but also his personality, his voice, his income, and his global following. Last night he joined Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras to sing beneath the EiffelTower - the Three Tenors’ third successive World Cup appearance, a record even Pele wouldenvy. The event will be televised tomorrow to a predicted audience of 2 billion viewers, thebiggest TV concert in history.
’I think his size suits him,’ says U2’s Bono, who sang with him in Modena in 1995 at one of hisPavarotti and Friends concerts. ’I think he’s a very handsome man, and you reach for words like ’earthquake’ and ’volcano’. He wasn’t supposed to be thin and weedy. He’s big in every sense -generous, everything. What I like about him is the way the opera follows him off stage.’
