A VET has discovered that pop music makes pigs eat betterand feel relaxed and happy. Younger sows preparing to givebirth are especially soothed by the strains of soft rock.

John Carr, of the Garth Veterinary Group, in Driffield,Yorkshire, has been encouraging stockmen to play theradio since he found that bands such as Status Quo, Queenand U2 raised the spirits of pigs. Carr, 39, has spent 17 yearstrying to find ways to improve pigs’ quality of life.

Farmers have reported good results after playing tapes topiglets, who often have problems switching to solid feedand can starve.

Carr, an international pig expert, said : "The music we play iseasy to listen to and makes the pigs feel more comfortable.
