Noel Heads ’Uncool’ Chart
Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher has been named the world’s least coolrock star - just ahead of the band’s arch-rival Robbie Williams.
The guitarist topped an annual reader poll in Melody Maker magazinejust weeks after walking out on the international leg of Oasis’s world tour.
Runner-up was American shock rocker Marilyn Manson, while Williams,recently voted the world’s sexiest man, came in third in the "uncoolest"stakes.
Veteran crooner Tom Jones, who has seen a renaissance in popularityamong young music-lovers since releasing his Reload cover album lastyear, made a surprise entry at number nine.
Spice Girl Mel C is listed at number four, with U2 singer Bono at fiveand teenage sex symbols Billie Piper and Britney Spears at eight and10 respectively.
While Oasis have slipped in the cool stakes, fellow Indie veterans ManicStreet Preachers continue to ride high, with songwriter Nicky Wire takingthe accolade for coolest rock star in a separate top ten.
Kelly Jones and Fran Healy, of Brit award winners Stereophonics andTravis respectively, are second and third, while last year’s number one,Cerys Matthews of Catatonia, comes fourth.
Late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain is a surprise new entry in sixth place,while former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown gets his revenge onMancunian rivals Oasis by reaching number 10.
Reacting to his number one cool placing, Nicky Wire joked : "I am gladI can be the most unpopular man in rock - and still be the most cool."
