CULTURAL CARNIVALWHEN RAIN IS ART — OR WHEN IT POURS, IT BORESMichael Kilian
NEW YORK — Have you ever stood before a window at night whenit’s raining ? Did you realize you were looking at art ?
I made the discovery that rain-wet window panes can be art whilestrolling through the bountiful amazements to be seen at this year’sversion of what has become one of the ultimate art experiences inAmerica : the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial Exhibition —in this case, "Whitney Biennial 2000."
The aim of this recurring cultural carnival is to present The Art Worldand us mere museumgoers with a true and all-encompassing picture ofthe very latest in American art—what you might otherwise call itsstate-of-the-art art.
No fewer than six Whitney curators went combing through the nationfor this stuff, coming back with a vast haul representing the imaginativeoutput of no fewer than 97 state-of-the-art artists.
...From Jennifer Reeder was a video called "Nevermind," which showeda woman holding her ears and screaming while playing music byNirvana, U2 and Madonna (actually, a work after my own heart).
